Excerpt from Secrets of the Lost Mode of Prayer by Gregg Braden.
Researchers suggest that we use one of these four modes of prayer, or a combination:
1. Colloquial (Informal)
2. Petitionary
3. Ritualistic
4. Meditative
There is a fifth mode that has been lost in recent centuries. This mode is FEELING. This mode was recorded in ancient Gnostic and Christian traditions more than 2,000 years ago. In early translations of the biblical book of John he said, “Ask without hidden motive and be surrounded by your answer. Be surrounded by our desires fulfilled.” Jesus was quoted in the Nag Hammadi Library as saying when we say to the mountain, “Mountain move away, it will move away.” This was also the main focus of the Isaiah Scroll, perhaps the most important of the Dead Sea Scrolls discovered in 1946.
Rather than feeling a sense of hopelessness while praying, this mode invites us to feel a clear and powerful feeling as if our prayers have already been answered.
Ancients surrounded themselves with the images of the things they chose to experience, feeling as if their prayers had already been answered using their full body and all of their senses.
Asking for something to happen gives power to the things we’d like to change. For example, by asking for world peace while feeling anger toward the war, we may inadvertently fuel the very conditions that lead to the opposite of peace. Instead, feel peace.
For example, the ancient rain dancers actually brought rain by feeling what the rain felt like. The felt the rain on their body, naked feet in the mud, the smell of fresh rain, and felt walking through fields of corn chest high because there was so much rain. They used thought, feeling and emotion in addition to the senses.
Trust that it will come and give thanks and appreciation for it. Give thanks for the opportunity to participate in creation. Through our thanks we honor all possibilities, while bringing the ones we choose to this world.
This feeling of appreciation releases the life affirming chemistry of powerful hormones in our bodies and strengthens our immune systems. The quantum effects carry beyond our bodies and radiate out to the world.
Exercise:
Think of something that you’d like to experience in your life – anything. It may be the healing of a physical condition, abundance, or finding your perfect partner. Rather than asking for it, feel as though it has already happened. Breathe deeply, feel the fullness of your prayer in every detail. Now feel gratitude for what your life is like with this prayer already answered. Note the ease and release that comes from giving thanks, rather than the longing and yearning that comes from asking for help.
